Top seeds take floor tonight for semifinals

The Coweta County Middle School Athletic League basketball tournament continues tonight with boys and girls semifinal games after play began Tuesday following a week of delays due to school cancellations.

East Coweta and Evans’ boys along with girls teams from Madras and Evans took first steps toward reaching Friday’s championship with victories.

Tonight, however, they’ll be tasked with taking out one of the tournament’s top-two seeded lineups.

Following Tuesday’s 37-23 victory over Madras, led by Jaquez Walker’s 13 points, fourth-seeded Evans tries to hand undefeated Smokey Road its first loss of the year. The No. 1 seeded Wildcats went through the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record while earning a first-round bye.

Against Madras, David Raines added 10 points for Evans, which improved its record to 5-4. The Eagles closed the 2013-14 campaign at 1-8.

Tonight’s boys semifinals begin with host Lee, seeded second, taking on an East Coweta team that was forced to hold off sixth-seeded Arnall 37-33 in Tuesday’s first round. The Indians were led by Amari Strickland’s 10 points while Grayson Collette and Deandre Brinkley each added nine in the victory. The Knights ended its season at 1-8.

The Wolves enter tonight with a 6-2 record.

Girls action also continues with semifinal games tonight at Arnall. The Lady Knights held off both Smokey Road and Evans for the tournament’s No. 1 seed with a 6-2 record. The hosts will play No. 5 seeded Madras in game two.

The Lady Eagles advanced with a 26-18 victory over No. 4 seed Lee. Charla Echols scored 10 points to lead Madras while Leia Robinson added nine.

Aja Sparks led Lee with a game-high 12 points as the Lady Wolves ended the season at 4-5.

Semifinal action begins at Arnall tonight with a showdown between Smokey Road and Evans girls lineups, both of which closed the regular season at 5-3 prior to a tiebreaking coin flip won by the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Cougars, who were forced to settle for the No. 3 seed, took care of business with an impressive 43-17 win over sixth-seeded East Coweta. Janyah Stargell and Jekeria Strickland finished with 19 and 16 points, respectively, to lead Evans.

Meosha Martin led East Coweta (1-8) with eight points.

Both championship games will be held Friday at Lee. The girls game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys finale.
