Vikings fall to Columbus in extra innings, 12-10

Northgate’s baseball team travels to Woodward Academy on Friday following a 12-10 loss to Columbus in extra innings. 


The Columbus Blue Devils and the Northgate Vikings needed extra innings Tuesday before Columbus escaped on the road with a 12-10 victory in a game that wasn’t decided until the eighth inning.

With the game tied 7-7, teams traded extended rallies in the eighth with Columbus scoring five times and Northgate scoring three runs before the rally was cut short.

The loss dropped the team’s record to 1-4 on the early season.

Northgate was scheduled to travel to Woodward Academy on Wednesday for a non-region game but it was rescheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. due to wet field conditions.

On Tuesday, The Vikings managed to outhit the Blue Devils 11-9, but left 11 runners stranded.

Despite the loss, three pitchers went to the mound for the Vikings and combined on 12 strikeouts.

Starting pitcher Armond Upshaw struck out six while giving up four runs on five walks and five hits.

Chase Allen pitched 2 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking one and allowing an earned run.

Chad Green took the loss in the after striking out two, but giving up five runs in the eighth.

Columbus pitcher Will Kilgore frustrated Northgate on both sides of the diamond. Kilgore allowed three earned runs in relief, but also struck out six.

Offensively, Kilgore was 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Team- mate Carson Greathouse led the Blue Devils with three RBIs.

Will Bice picked up the save for the Blue Devils.

Knox Carter also had two RBIs for Columbus.

His sacrifice fly gave Columbus a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. He then broke the game open in the top of the eighth with as single that drove in two runs.

Upshaw tried to help his own cause with at the plate, turning in a 3-for-4 performance and driving in runs in the first and the third.

Jordan Schmits also drove in two RBIs with a single in the fourth.

Leadoff hitter Andrew Burden and Connor Wilson also had RBIs for the Vikings who have scored 24 runs in their last three games, but only have one win to show for it, a 13-2 decision over Sandy Creek last Saturday.

Local high school action resumes today with a pair of games between lineups from Coweta and Fayette counties.

East Coweta hosts White- water at 5:30 p.m., in a game that was postponed from Wednesday, while Newnan travels to play Sandy Creek.
