Cougars bounce back with win

Newnan's boys basketball team bounced back in a big way on Wednesday at home, improving its Region 3-AAAAAA record to 16-6 overall and 4-4 in region play with a 66-64 win over Douglas County.

The Cougars came into the contest needing the win after dropping four of their last five games, including Tuesday night against last place Langston Hughes.

After heading into the fourth quarter down 51-45, Newnan took over in the final eight minutes of the game and outscored Douglas County 21-13 to pull out the win.

It was Newnan's second victory this year against the Tigers. When the two teams played last month, the Cougars won on the road 56-53.

With the loss, Douglas County fell to 17-6 and 5-5.

Immanuel Griggs controlled the game inside for the Cougars and finished with 18 points to finish as Newnan's top scorer.

The Cougars' senior got to the line 11 times and hit six of his chances.

Jannson Williams added 13, Doniel Dean 11 points and Diamond Jones 10 en route to pace three players in double figures.

The Cougars shot 65 percent from the line (15 of 23) with Williams and Dean each hitting 3 of 4 attempts.

Newnan led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, but fell behind 30-26 at the break.

The Cougars close out the regular season on Friday night with a win against rival East Coweta at home.

Newnan won the first meeting between the two schools 62-60 earlier this year.

In girls action Wednesday night, Douglas County defeated Newnan 56-31 as the Lady Cougars (6-17, 2-2) suffered their fourth straight loss in 3-AAAAAA play.

The Lady Tigers improved their record to 19-3 and 7-2 in 3-AAAAAA while remaining one game behind region-leader Westlake.

No other information was available at deadline.
