Indians drop opener at state duals

East Coweta wrestlers opened the GHSA Class AAAAAA State Duals with a tough loss to Area 5 champion Etowah to put the Indians on the brink of elimination.

Etowah advanced with a 51-22 win in the double-elimination event while winning 10 of the 14 matches.

Junior heavyweight Dawson Ellis and lightweight Dusty Nelson each picked up individual victories for East Coweta to keep things close early in a match that opened at 195 pounds.

James Walker and Alex Sorenson won respective matches for the Indians, which battled in several others including an overtime loss by Matthew Durham at 113 pounds.

Also moving on in the winner’s bracket in Class AAAAAA was nationally ranked Archer, which overpowered Lowndes 60-9 and fellow state powers Collins Hill and Camden County.

Collins Hill defeated Chattahoochee 37-25, which will now face East Coweta in today’s opening round of the loser’s bracket. Camden County dominated Meadowcreek 63-3.

Class AAAAAA wrestlebacks are scheduled to begin around 1:15 p.m.

Others advancing with wins on Thursday at the Macon Centreplex were Newton and Rockdale County, both out of Area 2-AAAAAA as well as North Forsyth and Grayson.

Grayson defeated Area 3-AAAAAA champion Douglas County 53-21.

Both representatives in Class AAAAA from Area 4 advanced in the first round.

Ola and Whitewater, which led a 13-team division also including Northgate, opened the tournament with victories. The Wildcats, who finished as 4-AAAAA runner-up, held off Lakeside-DeKalb 32-30 while area champion Ola outlasted Dunwoody 41-36.

Whitewater will open this morning’s winner’s bracket at 9:45 a.m., against Pope, a 43-25 winner over Ware County. Ola faces Woodland-Cartersville, which shut out Warner Robins.
