Smith helps lead Heritage girls to win

The Heritage School's girls basketball team shook off a sluggish first-quarter slump to build a 14-point lead through three periods before holding off a late comeback by Deerfield Windsor for a 45-42 victory on Tuesday at the Stratford Academy Tip-Off Tournament in Macon.

Leslie Smith scored a teamhigh 11 points for the Lady Hawks, who went 9 of 16 from the free-throw line. Smith was also 2 of 4 from 3-point range in the win.

Heritage struggled early as Deerfield-Windsor took a sixpoint lead into the second quarter. But the Lady Hawks went on a 18-6 run from there into halftime to lead 24-18 at the break.

Eight players contributed to Heritage's scoring effort while putting together 23 rebounds and 19 steals, including a teamhigh seven in each category from freshman Kara Groover.

Both Kara and sister Karlee each chimed in with eight points apiece in the victory, with Karlee adding four steals and a block.

Abboe Farr and Maggie Crosby each finished with five points each. Ruthie Powell had four points and Amanda Windom finished with three.

Both Heritage School teams will resume play on Tuesday at home in a non-region doubleheader against Flint River Academy.
