Northgate, Newnan cap off seasons

The Northgate and Newnan competitive cheerleading teams closed out their 2013 seasons this weekend at the GHSA state championships in Columbus.

Both schools entered the event hoping to bring home state titles after solid performances throughout the year.

Northgate won the Region 4-AAAAA title, however, Saturday inside the Columbus Coliseum, the state crown went to Region 4-AAAAA rival McIntosh.

Northgate was called down to the floor as one of the top six squads in Class AAAAA, but finished out of the running when the top four teams were recognized.

Newnan went into the as the Region 3-AAAAAA champ, but finished out of the top six. The team, however, scored 252 points for its highest score of the season while placing 14th overall.

Northgate was attempting to recapture the state title. Until last year, the Lady Vikings had won five-straight state crowns.

This year, Houston County finished second, Effingham County third and Lee County fourth.

In the Class AAAAAA division, Lambert won this year’s state title, followed by Johns Creek, West Forsyth and Lassiter.
