Cougars can't keep up with No. 5 Colquitt

When Newnan walked off the field last year at Drake Stadium following a secondround loss to Colquitt County, the Cougars had a right to feel like they were as good a team as their opponent.

On Friday, though, the No. 5 state-ranked Packers proved they were the better in a postseason rematch to open this year's Class AAAAAA playoffs.

Looking much like a team poised to make a return trip to the state semifinals, Colquitt County scored on its first three possessions in the first quarter en route to a 41-10 victory that ended a 6-5 season for a much younger Newnan lineup than when the teams met nearly a year ago.

The Packers returned 16 starters including senior quarterback Daniel Mobley, who befuddled the Cougars' defense both with his arm and his legs, running for two scores and throwing for another before halftime as Colquitt took a 28-3 lead at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

Colquitt (9-2), which was ranked No. 1 in the state prior to last week's loss to Camden for the Region 1-AAAAAA championship, racked up 440 yards of offense, including 204 on the ground. The majority of the latter came from running back Siheim King's 124 yards on 11 carries, including a run from the 1-yard line to cap a 10-play, 61-yard drive on the Packers' first possession.

Mobley was just as tough to stop, completing 25 of 36 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, including a precision throw between two Newnan defenders that allowed receiver Javonte Woods to make a leaping catch for a 25-yard score to close the first half.

Colquitt, which will travel to North Cobb for next week's second-round playoff game, held Newnan, the No. 3 seed from Region 3-AAAAAA, to 226 yards, 68 of which came on a fourth-quarter drive that led to the Cougars' only touchdown with 2:32 to play on a 7-yard pass from quarterback Bailey Bryant to Darryel Hines.

But most of Newnan's yardage was kept to big chunks and little else. A 44-yard pass from Bryant to receiver Chrishawn Dix set up the Cougars with prime field position inside the Colquitt 20. But the drive stalled, leading to Conner Cox's 28-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the second quarter.

By that time, however, Colquitt had taken a 28-3 lead after jumping ahead 21-0 after the first quarter.

Newnan managed two first downs on its second possession, and after a punt, the Packers drove 86 yards in 14 plays to score on a 3-yard keeper by Mobley off left-tackle to push a 14-0 lead with 1:25 left in the opening period.

On the first play after the kickoff, Javonta Woods picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards to the Newnan 22.

Four plays later, Mobley kept the ball and scored from nine yards out, and after Vega's conversion, Colquitt led 21-0 with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Packers punted their next possession, but only had to drive 36 yards to score the next time they had the ball, with Woods making a fine leaping catch in the end zone of a 25-yard pass from Mobley. Vega made his fourth straight extra point as the Packers led 28-0 with 6:38 left in the half.

The Packers added field goals of 32 and 22 yards from kicker Jose Vega in the third quarter and scored a final touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Mobley to Ty Lee in the fourth quarter to force a running clock for the final 10:51 of play.
