Newnan girls capture 3-AAAAAA crown


Newnan's cross country program picked up four trophies, including a varsity girls championship at Saturday's Region 3-AAAAAA meet at the Newnan Utilities reservoirs. The Cougars finished as region runner-up while both JV squads also won team events. Varsity lineups now advance to Saturday's GHSA Class AAAAAA State Championships in Carrollton.

The next stop for Newnan High's boys and girls cross country teams is Carrollton for Saturday's Class AAAAAA state meet.

East Coweta's boys also advanced to this week's championships held again on the state course at Carrollton Elementary School.

The Lady Cougars earned their berth by way of its Region 3-AAAAAA championship following last weekend's near-perfect performance on their home course near the Newnan Utilities reservoirs.

Newnan's girls finished with 16 points, one shy of a perfect mark, well ahead of Douglas County (46). The Lady Cougars had all five placers in the top-8 individuals to cross led by Elizabeth Westerfield's second-place finish in 21:39.

Tri-Cities' Tatyana Hodnett won the individual region title in 21:17.

The Cougars, meanwhile, also had a strong showing, finishing as region runnerup to Douglas County's boys, while East Coweta took third. The Tigers finished with 43 points followed by Newnan (49), East Coweta (66) and Langston Hughes (81).

The Lady Cougars, who won this year's Coweta Cup championship, packed together neatly on the course to claim second, third, fourth, sixth and eighth place while two teammates were also among the top-12 finishers.

Ha n n a h Hud son a nd Anna Haydon placed third and fourth, respectively, for Newnan in 22:33 and 22:36. Mary Douglass Hallman (22:40) was only four seconds behind the latter teammate's pace to place sixth and Megan Diebboll quickly completed the scoring just four more seconds after Hallman crossed in 22:44.

Maya Sherman (9th, 22:59) and Caroline Thomas (12th, 24:09) both finished before Douglas County's third scorer had reached the line.

In the boys competition, Newnan senior Matthew Miller (17:40) finished second behind Douglas County's Danny Shaughnessy (17:40). The Cougars had three runners place in the top-10 en route to its second-place team finish.

East Coweta, meanwhile, had two runners in the topfive with senior Josh Bruce (18:20) finishing third and Samuel Siprelle (18:28) fourth.

The Newnan boys also got a strong showing from Tyler Vermilya (18:58) who was seventh. Eli Moore was ninth (19:05), Jonathan Martin (19:23)was 14th.

The Cougars completed with Ben Ketelsen (17th, 19:40), Nick Dudek (18th, 19:52) w and Enrique Inostroza (19th, 19:54) all following each other across the line.

Indians runner Chase Pack (23rd, 20:20), Kyle Hunt (24th, 20:30) and Matthew Shumake (25th, 20:35) also came in consecutively to round out East Coweta's scoring.

East Coweta's Jose Mosquera finished 28th in (21:33).

Darian Pugh (23:17) was the top girls runner for the Lady Indians, finishing 10th overall. Anna Weatherly (25:11) was 18th, Sylenna Brown (27:43) was 21st and Hannah McLay (28:06) was 22nd.

In JV meets, Newnan's girls dominated with nine of the top 10 finishers to post a perfect 15 points. The Lady Cougars were led by Ally Thomas (23:22), Lindley Hudson (24:19), Rebecca Barron (24:19), Sarah Ivy (23:34), Emily Flournoy (25:04) and Hannah Thomas (25:21) among the top-six finishers.

Emma Morris, Amy Booth and Julia Sanders all finished in the top-10, placing eighth through 10th overall.

Newnan's JV boys also placed first while competing among four schools. Ty Mossburg (2nd, 19:52) and Jack Hrinko (20:10) led the way while Travis Greene, Tava ris Johnson, Tyler Baars, and Ryan Cost placed fifth through eighth-place, respectively.

East Coweta was led by Caleb Christopher's ninthplace finish in 20:59.
