Westerfield, Miller lead Newnan teams in tune-up for Coweta Cup

Newnan's cross-country teams will take some momentum into Saturday's host Coweta Cup Championships following solid efforts in this year's ASICS Invitational in Douglasville.

The Lady Cougars led the way with a fourth-place finish among 20 schools in the 5A/6A division at the annual meet, which was held this year at Fox Hall Farms Shooting Club.

Juniors Elizabeth Westerfield and Matthew Miller also finished among the top-10 individual placers in respective girls and boys events, each with season-best times.

Westerfield crossed just ahead of Dacula freshman Karly Rookis in seventh- place in 20:16 while preparing for this week's county championship race, which will be held at her team's home course surrounding the Newnan Utilities water reservoirs.

Miller sub-17-minute effort paced the Cougars to an 11th-place finish among 24 teams in the Class 6A/5A boys race. The defending Coweta Cup boys individual champion, placed ninth individually in the division with a season-best time of 16:48.

All five scorers for the Lady Cougars placed inside the top 33 finishers on Saturday, including Anna Haydon's 15th-place finish behind Westerfield. The junior finished in 20:46.

Senior Hannah Hudson was the third Newnan girls runner to cross in 22nd position with a time of 21:15 while teammates Maya Sherman and Mary Douglass Hallman completed the scoring together in 32nd and 33rd place, respectively in 21:45 and 21:47.

Caroline Thomas (46th, 22:02), Ally Thomas (56th, 22:25), Megan Diebboll (58th, 22:30) and Lindley Hudson (77th, 23:03) all were well ahead of the top-half of a field of 162 runners.

The meet was split between Championship Divisions and multi-classification runs in 5A/6A, 3A, 4A, and 1A, 2A. Peachtree Ridge swept both championship events. Newnan's boys packed together behind Martin, with five runners finishing between Jonathan Martin in 70th place and Eli Moore in 87th position.

Martin and Ben Ketelsen were a second apart in 70th and 71st place in 18:17 and 18:18. Senior Nick Dudek was the Cougars' fourth runner to cross in 82nd place in 18:29 while senior Ty Mossburg and Moore were also a second apart with marks of 18:31 and 18:32, respectively.
