Region tourneys begin tonight for county teams

by Doug Gorman

All three local Georgia High School Association volleyball teams will be in action tonight when they take the court to begin their double-elimination area tournaments. Both East Coweta and Newnan travel to Luella High School in Henry County to participate in the Area 2-AAAAAA tournament, while Northgate opens Area 4-AAAAA play tonight at Whitewater.

East Coweta enters the postseason on a roll. The Lady Indians claimed both the Coweta County tournament and the regular-season area title under the direction of first-year head coach Amber McClure. The Lady Indians finished the regular season with a 38-6 overall record and a 7-0 mark in area play.

The Lady Indians start tournament action at 6:30 against Tri-Cities.

According to maxpreps.com East Coweta junior Jessie Bartholomew heads into the area tournament leading all of Class AAAAAA with 89 kills. Teammate Sydney Mauer is second in the classification with 834 assists.

Newnan heads to the tournament as the second-seed after posting a 24-12 record and a 6-1 mark area competition. The Lady Cougars’ only loss in Area 2-AAAAA competition was against rival East Coweta.

Newnan’s Jenni Young is ranked ninth in Class AAAAAA with 184 kills. Julie Masonheimer is ranked 13th with 232 assists after taking over as starting center when teammate Tiffany Maes went down with a season-ending knee injury.

The Lady Cougars, led by head coach Leslie Fant, face Westlake today at 6:30 to open postseason play.

In the Area 4-AAAAA tournament, Northgate earned a first-round bye after finishing with a 25-23 overall record and a 6-2 mark against Region 4-AAAAA opponents.

Matt Trucks’ Lady Vikings earned a first-round bye after garnering the No. 3 seed at the tournament and will play the winner of the Whitewater-Mundy’s Mill match at 7:30 p.m.

Whitewater captured the Class AAAAA title last season, but has been hit hard by graduation this year.

In their regular-season match, East Coweta made short work of the Tri-Cities, rolling to a 25-6, 25-4 victory.

The easy win by the Lady Indians closed out the region portion of East Coweta’s slate, but the Lady Indians finished the regular-season campaign winning seven of the final eight matches.

Newnan’s late-season run includes winning seven-straight late last month.

The streak included sweeping Class A power Eagle’s Landing Christian and also winning a three-set thriller over county rival Northgate.

During the regular-season Northgate beat both Whitewater and Mundy’s Mill in Area 4-AAAAA matches.

Among the Lady Vikings non-region victories this year, Northgate beast Houston County twice and earned sweeps against Tift County and Brookwood.

A year ago, Northgate advanced to the Class AAAAA Elite 8 before falling in four games to Starr’s Mill.

Three seniors, Randee Harvel, Erin Valentine and Michella Crooks are hoping to make one last deep playoff run for the Lady Vikings.
