East Coweta clinches Area 2-AAAAAA title

The East Coweta volleyball team pushed its record to 31-5 Tuesday afternoon with a sweep of Lovejoy (25-4, 25-10) and Tri-Cities (25-4 25-6).

With the wins, East Coweta clinched the Area 2-AAAAAA title in head coach Amber McClure's first season as head coach.

The Lady Indians entered Tuesday's night's tri-match riding a wave of momentum.

Saturday the squad went 8-0 at the Rockdale County meet, sweeping every one of its matches that included a 25-17, 25-11 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

'It was really proud of our team,' she said. 'It was a really good performance for us.'

East Coweta hasn't dropped a set in 10 straight matches.'

In Tuesday's action, Tri-Cities had trouble getting the ball back over the net or even getting to East Coweta's serves. Jessi Bartholomew finished with 11 aces. Peyton Smith added 4 and April Schmidt and Elizabeth Schramm adde three.

Against Lovejoy Sydney Mauer added 16 assists and Smith 8. Sydney Winters added five aces.

Dominique Ingram entered Tuesday's game fresh off a solid tournament over the weekend.

'She really came into her own,' McClure said.

East Coweta hits the road again Thursday for a match against Walton.

Newnan wins on Senior Night: The Newnan Cougars celebrated Senior Night with a pair of 2-0 sweeps over Langston Hughes and Luella.

Seniors Shantay James, Julie Masonheimer and Shundra Hill were honored in the last home Area 2-AAAAAA matches of their careers.

'We played hard, and it was a good effort,' head coach Leslie Fant said.

Northgate sweeps area matches: The Northgate Lady Vikings swept Forest Park, Mundy's Mill and Union Grove on Tuesday to conclude the Area 4-AAAAA play.

The Lady Vikings improved their record to 19-17 overall and 7-2 in league play.

Northgate is expected to go into the tournament as the No. 3 seed.

'It was really a completed team effort tonight,' Trucks said. 'They are starting to realize what is at stake with the playoffs coming up.'
