Hawks give Dawson Street a rude welcome

New neighbors are often welcomed with a party, but The Heritage School wasn’t exactly in a giving mood on Friday at home against Dawson Street unless it came in the form of touchdowns and interceptions. The Hawks jumped on the Wildcats, who are opening a campus just a ¼ mile away from their school on Highway 29 for three early scores and picked off three Dawson Street pass attempts en route to a convincing 38-6 victory that evened Heritage’s record at 2-2 this season.

Junior quarterback Brad Macke threw for a pair of touchdowns, one of which was set up by his own interception return as the Hawks defense held Dawson Street scoreless for the game. He later added an 85-yard touchdown run off a keeper for Heritage’s final touchdown.

The Wildcats’ lone tally came in the closing 30 seconds of the second quarter after Macke found Cole Jones in the end zone for a 21-point lead when Wendell Hughes returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to close Heritage’s halftime lead to 21-6. Macke’s other touchdown pass, an 11-yard strike to Peyton Henson, opened the scoring for a 7-0 lead with 3:22 left in the first quarter.

Chaz Bankston added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the victory on opposite ends of halftime. The latter came after the Hawks defense forced a punt to begin the third quarter on key tackles by Kirby Arnall and Caleb Woodruff, both for losses. Taking over at midfield, Bankston finished off a scoring drive highlighted by two long Hamp Smith carries with an 8-yard touchdown to push the Heritage lead to 27-6 with 7:50 left in the third quarter.

The Hawks defense came up with another big stop on Dawson Street’s following possession. A sack on first-and-goal eventually led to the Wildcats losing the ball on downs just outside the 10-yard line.

A few plays later, Macke was off to the end zone on a quarterback keeper and a 35-6 lead after the junior managed to make the most of a bad snap on the extra point to find freshman Chase Evans for a 2-point conversion.

Tristan Stoffle and Jake Henderson added interceptions in the victory, with David Barber tacking on a 24-yard field goal for the Hawks’ final points of the game.
