Newnan, East Coweta start Brookwood Invitational with wins

Fresh off big Region 2-AAAAAA victories on Tuesday, both Newnan and East Coweta's softball teams continued its winning ways in separate games to open the Brookwood Invitational tournament on Wednesday.

East Coweta posted its third consecutive shutout over a 48-hour span, blanking Peachtree Ridge 7-0.

Newnan, meanwhile, opened the event by knocking off Starr's Mill 4-1.

The Lady jumped on Peachtree Ridge for four runs in the bottom of the first in a 12-hit performance where Katey Lynch and Shemiah Sanchez combined fox half the total.

Lynch had a double and a team-high 2 RBIs among her three hits while Sanchez had a pair of doubles and an RBI. Kia Smith also had two hits in the victory.

A day after shutting out Douglas County with a no-hit effort, East Coweta pitcher Morgan Goree went the distance while blanking Peachtree Ridge in a sevenstrikeout effort without allowing a walk along the way.

In the Lady Cougars' victory, Newnan surrendered an unearned run in the second inning and overcame three errors to knock off the Lady Panthers in the tournament that continues through Saturday.

Pitcher Tori Loveless went the distance en route to the victory, giving up just four hits, striking out three and walking one.

Chaycie Goggins led the way for the Lady Cougars with a 2-for-4 performance.

Leadoff hitter Shania Colton and clean up hitter Adren Jobe drove in both the RBIs.

The other two runs were unearned for Newnan.

Colton's drove in her run with a triple. Goggins two-hit performance included a double.

Newnan built a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and never trailed in the game. The Lady Cougars added a single run in the top of the first and put the game away when they pushed two runs across the plate.

Newnan pushed its record to 10-5.

East Coweta will play Loganville and West Laurens in a doubleheader on Friday at Loganville while Newnan will play Lanier on Friday at 7 p.m.

Tournament play continues through Saturday.
