Teams prepare for Northgate's Daley Invitational

Already one-third into the 2013 high school cross country season following runs at the Carrollton Invitational last Saturday, Coweta's GHSA lineups get a chance to run headto- head this weekend close to home at Northgate's third annual Coach Daley Invitational meet. In addition to traditional early morning workouts, Northgate runners were busy traversing their home course on Tuesday afternoon, which loops from campus along Fischer Road.

In addition to East Coweta, Newnan and Northgate teams - all of which attended last weekend's Carrollton Orthopaedic Clinic Invitational - this Saturday's field will also include Landmark Christian, Bremen, Carrollton, Central-Carroll, Hardaway and Heard County.

'It's a solid group of teams coming, so we're hoping for a real good meet,' said Northgate head coach Chris Kimes.

It'll be the only scheduled home meet of the season for Northgate, which hosted last year's Coweta County Championships. This year's county meet will be hosted by Newnan at Newnan Utilities Park on Oct. 19.

Kimes split his girls runners last week at Carrollton between the 4A/5A division, where the Lady Vikings placed eighth, and the challenging Championship division that was led by Landmark Christian teammates Kathryn Foreman (18:46) and Nicole Fegans (19:27). Former Northgate standout Hailey Gollnick, now at Starr's Mill, placed fourth in 19:57.

Rising to the challenge, three Lady Vikings crossed among the top-50 finishers while competing among top lineups from Peachtree Ridge, Brookwood and West Forsyth.

Caitlin Bellora led Northgate's girls, placing 19th in 20:50. Caroline Nelson was 34th in 21:41 and Erica Lee finished 40th in 21:49 to pace the team. Elise Glorvigen (22:47), Laura Rodes (23:42), Julianna Fugate (23:43) and Taylor Lee (24:20) also ran in the Championship division, placing 11th among 20 schools.

Newnan's girls also took on the challenge of the Championship division, finishing 13th behind Northgate and Landmark.

The Lady Cougars were led by Elizabeth Westerfield's time of 22:03 in 52nd position. Hannah Hudson (22:36) and Anna Haydon (22:41) paced the effort while Caroline Thomas (23:25) and Mary Douglass Hallman (23:38) completed the scoring.

Maya Sherman (23:40) and Lindley Hudson (23:41) were also among a pack at the finish line with the latter duo while Megan Diebboll (24:05) and Ally Thomas (24:57) also competed for Newnan's girls.

The Lady Vikings showcased their depth while also placing eighth among 13 teams in the Class 4A/5A run led by Laura Rodes' fifth-place effort of 21:58. The effort was a personal best that was 1:25 faster than her effort a week earlier at the Covered Bridge Run.

Yasmin Gee (24:52), Cathleen Hoffman (25:04), Kristin Gilbert (26:14), Gracie Robbins (27:15) and Madeline McDonald (27:54) contributed to Northgate's effort.

Also competing in the 4A/5A girls event was East Coweta. The Lady Indians finished 11th led by Darien Pugh's mark of 24:22. Anna Weatherly (25:31), Sylenna Brown, Hannah McClay and Monique Terell completed the scoring.

Northgate and East Coweta boys also ran together in the Class 4A/5A run. The Vikings finished sixth and the Indians 14th.

Newnan's boys finished 23rd in the Championship division, which was led by St. Pius and included out of state programs in Auburn, Ala and Leon High out of Tallahassee, Fla.

The Cougars were led by Matthew Miller's time of 18:29 on the state championship course. He was coming off a personal best of 17:51 at the 2nd annual Nike Panther XC Invitational hosted by Starr's Mill.

Tyler Vermilya (19:14), Tyler Mossburg (19:32), Ben Ketelsen (19:40) and Eli Moore (19:57) also scored for Newnan's boys on Saturday. Other runners for Newnan's boys included Nick Dudek (20:27) and Enrique Inostroza (20:27).

Northgate's boys were led in the Class 4A/5A division by Evan Vatave's mark of 18:59. Also scoring for the Vikings were Josh Oller (19:12), Spencer Ramthun (19:35), Andrew Lail (19:45) and Justin Whipple (19:45). Ameer Tabbaa (20:02), Jaelin Rainey (20:09) and Gabe Mendez (20:16) also competed for Northgate.
