Lady Vikings rally past Newnan

Lady Vikings rally past Newnan in second meeting of early season

The Northgate Lady Vikings spotted visiting Newnan two runs in the top of the third inning and then unleashed some fireworks of their own in the bottom of the inning en route to an 8-3 softball victory Monday night.

It was the second game between cross-county foes over a three-day span, while now preparing to begin region play over the next few days.

Trailing 2-0, Northgate pushed seven runs across the plate in the bottom of the third to take control.

Northgate added its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-2.

Newnan added one more run in the top of seventh, but its hopes of stringing together a last-inning rally ended with a groundout to second baseman Lauren DeLoach to end the game.

The teams previously met on Friday at the East Carroll Recreation Complex as part of the Georgia Dugout Club's Leadoff Classic. Northgate also won the first meeting 9-0. A final meeting is set for Sept. 25 at Newnan on the eve of respective region tournaments the following week. On Monday, Lady Vikings outhit the Lady Cougars 10-5 and took advantage of three Newnan errors to win the game.

Northgate pitcher McKenzie Peace picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs and finishing with one strikeout. She also pitched around four walks.

Brenna Skalski, Casey Kent and Brittany Futral each had RBI hits in the victory. Skalski finished 3-for-3, reaching on three bunts.

Jenna Pealor added a 2-for-3 performance and Peace helped her own cause with a double and an RBI.

The Lady Cougars were led offensively by starting pitcher Tori Loveless' two hits. Teammates Arden Jobe and Lindsay Stewart , Loveless had two hits to lead the Lady Cougars, which opened the scoring on Lindsay Stewart's single to score Maysen Willard in the second after Willard began a two-run rally with a single of her own. Newnan then hustled out a second run on a double steal between Stewart and Chaycie Goggins, with the latter breaking from third toward home on the initial relay throw.

With the victory, Northgate moved its record to 4-2. Newnan fell to 1-3.

The Lady Vikings open the Region 4-AAAAA portion of their schedule Thursday night at 7 p.m. against defending state champions Union Grove.

Newnan opens its Region 3-AAAAAA slate at home Thursday in a contest against Douglas County.
