Heritage School makes strides during 'mudfest'

by Doug Gorman

The Heritage School's football team got a small taste of what Friday nights are going to be like this fall when they took on Frederica Academy in a GISA scrimmage as part of the Bob Peck Kickoff Classic.

Minus the mud, of course.

Heritage put together impressive plays on both s i d e s of the l ine of scrimmage en route to the 20-17 victory in sloppy conditions atypical for a mid August preseason scrimmage.

The rainy weather this week forced Newnan's scrimmage at Griffin to be cancelled, with the Cougars now set to open the 2013 season at Drake Stadium on Friday against Marietta.

Also on Friday, Northgate hosts its scrimmage against Veterans at Henry Seldon Field.

East Coweta held its scrimmage on Thursday against Whitewater.

The Hawks, however, welcomed the tune-up for the 2013 season during what has been a rebuilding season so far after going 11-2 en route to last year's Class AAA championship game.

Heritage's senior class is comprised of four players.

The Hawks controlled the game most of the way, giving up the last touchdown on the final play of the game.

Rain, constant throughout this week, certainly didn't provide ideal conditions, but Heritage head coach Kevin Prisant's young team got valuable experience.

'It was a mud-fest out there,' he said. 'If we didn't have next week off, we might have cancelled it, but our kids really needed the work.'

Chaz Bankston scored two touchdowns and Matt Burns the other en route to the Hawks' win.

Quarterback Brad Macke also impressed the Hawks' coaching staff with his ability to run the offense.

'He did a really good job of executing our option package, Prisant said.

Cole Jones also won the praises of his coach from his tight end spot.

'He is a young, but he is getting there,' Prisant said.

Dalton Trammell and Trevor Sawyers anchored the defense from their linebacker spots, leading the team in tackles.

Jones is also getting experience among the Hawks' linebackers after switching from defensive end last year.

Trevor Henson also gained valuable experience at both the offensive and defensive line.

Most importantly for Prisant and staff, Heritage escaped the scrimmage without a major injury, though Harrison Holland was slightly banged up. It allowed freshman Hamp Smith a chance to step in and get plenty of playing time.

'It was just good to get out there and see our guys compete, Prisant said. 'It was a good effort, and as I have told them, if we work hard all the time, we are only going to get better.'

Heritage opens the season on Aug. 30 at home against Flint River, which holds its scrimmage this Friday. 'We get a week to prepare, so we are going to go see them, and then get ready for the opener,' Prisant said.
