Fall sports officially begin today for GHSA schools

Strap on the pads, break out the bats and balls and string up the volleyball net.

The 2013-14 high school sports season has officially arrived.

While the county's football players add pads today following five days of conditioning, varsity softball and volleyball take the field for the first time as allowed by the Georgia High School Association.

Softball teams - many of which are still awaiting the arrival of players participating in national tournaments with club lineups - will have just over a week to prepare before their first potential games on Aug. 9.

Northgate hosts Landmark among season openers a week from Friday.

The Lady Vikings and East Coweta are scheduled to play in this year's Georgia Dugout Club starting the week of Aug. 12. East Coweta will again host games from Aug. 14-17.

Volleyball matches among GHSA schools can begin as early as Monday, though most of the county's programs will wait a little while longer to open the season.

Northgate, which is coming off last year's trip to the Class AAAAA Final Four, travels to face a traditionally strong Eagle's Landing Christian program next Thursday for its season opener.

East Coweta, under first-year coach Amber McClure, is scheduled for a preseason playdate on Aug. 10 at Woodstock before opening the year at the Sequoyah Classic on Aug. 16-17.

Newnan's earliest date is an Aug. 13 tri-match at home with Our Lady of Mercy and Starr's Mill.

Two-time defending GISA champion Trinity Christian begins its quest for a potential three-peat next weekend in a tournament at Faulkner (Ala.) University before its home opener on Aug. 13 against Mount de Sales.

The Heritage School also enters its second year of varsity volleyball in 2013.

Football lineups will have at least 10 days in pads prior to possible scrimmages. East Coweta will host Whitewater on Thursday, Aug. 15. Newnan travels to Griffin on Friday, Aug. 16 while The Heritage School will participate again in the Bob Peck Kickoff Classic against Frederica in south Georgia.

Northgate's scrimmage is set for Friday, Aug. 23 at home against Veterans.
