GHSA Lacrosse Playoffs

Seasons end with first-round losses to Centennial

by Staff Reports

ROSWELL — The high school lacrosse season in Coweta County came to an abrupt end on Tuesday night at Centennial.

Respective Area 3-AAAAAA champions were too much for both East Coweta’s boys and Newnan’s girls in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs after each had finished as the No. 4 seed in 1-AAAAAA.

The Indians dropped a 21-5 decision to close its season at 8-7 overall. It was the second time the two teams faced off in 2013, with No. 5 state-ranked Centennial (16-3) winning both by a combined score of 43-10.

East Coweta loses only three seniors, two of which are starters to graduation. A dozen juniors and four sophomores are expected back in 2014.

The Lady Cougars, meanwhile, opened a first-round doubleheader by falling 21-1 to the No. 3 state-ranked Lady Knights (17-0-1), the only remaining unbeaten girls team in the state.

Newnan’s girls closed the season at 6-10-1 overall after winning this year’s Coweta Cup Championship.

Centennial’s girls jumped out to a 14-1 lead before the Lady Cougars got on the scoreboard with a goal from Savannah Ohliger in the second half. Hope Overton and Morgan Gardner split action in goal, each making eight saves.
