GymCats finish fifth led by Goad's effort in All-Around

ATLANTA — The road to another potential state championship wasn’t any easier for the Newnan High Gymcats at Friday’s GHSA State Championships following a fifth-place finish.

But the program didn’t look as if it was making its farewell appearance either.

Led by sophomore Sydney Goad’s third-place effort in the All-Around, Newnan again held its own among the likes of holdovers Lambert, Tift County and Lassiter along with newcomers Carrollton and Buford among the GHSA’s six team finalists at The Westminster School.

Lambert upended defending two-time state champions Tift County 109.575 to 108.9. Carrollton was third while Newnan was fifth with a score just over 106.

“The competition is up this year. The biggest difference right now between us and those other four teams [above us] is they have more depth,” said Newnan coach Kate Davis. “Of our five girls, we only lose one senior. The other four will be back.”

They include Goad, who for the second straight year earned individual honors while joined by fellow sophomores Elizabeth Hovey and Katie Shelnutt, as well as senior Alyssa Burnham among four returning gymnasts from Newnan’s trip to state in 2012.

This year’s team was joined by freshman Hailey Norton.

Goad, who was fifth on bars last year, didn’t place in the event on Friday with the team struggling as a whole with the setup of the apparatus according to Davis.

But the standout gymnast managed to earn top-four efforts in three others this time around, including state runner-up efforts on vault and beam.

“She had a very good night,” said Davis.

With Newnan opening on vault, Goad scored an impressive 9.5 after tying for the second-best score in last week’s state qualifier on the apparatus.

She later added a fourth-place effort on beam before again earning runner-up honors to eventual All-Around champion Beth Roberts of Tift on floor.

It was Roberts’ second consecutive All-Around title.

Complete results were unavailable by deadline on Friday.
