Northgate’s David Liberacki tries to elude the pursuit of Newnan’s Jackson Overton.

Even Mother Nature couldn’t stop Northgate’s boys lacrosse team from getting a chance to wash some of the bitter taste from a previous night’s loss out of their mouths.

The Vikings rinsed by making the most of a 9-3 victory over Newnan during the final game of this week’s Coweta Cup tournament.

The boys trophy was handed out on Thursday to East Coweta following a wild 21-16 game where Northgate jumped out to a 3-1 lead early.

A day later, the Vikings weren’t about to give up a similar advantage on Senior Night at Henry Seldon Field.

Senior Cole Carter scored twice and David Liberacki added a pair as Northgate built a 5-1 halftime lead against the Cougars.

Junior Jake Smerka, coming of a seven-goal outing in Thursday’s loss to East Coweta, led the way for Northgate while scoring three goals and adding an assist.

A Newnan lineup playing without top scorers Austin Ohliger and Drew Winslett, managed to pull within ta 5-2 deficit in the third. Jackson Overton and Zach Keene had early tallies for the Cougars while Spencer Smith added a goal early in the final period off an assist from Overton.

Long-pole Gage Wozniak, in his final regular season home game of his varsity career, scored for the second consecutive night in the win.

Northgate pushed its lead to 7-2 by the final minute of the third before scoring twice in the final seven minutes of the game.

Senior Devin Johns recorded the victory in goal for the Vikings.
