Newnan teams take 2nd, ECHS 3rd place

The Newnan Cougars tennis teams each earned the No. 2 seed out of Region 3-AAAAAA with a second-place finish at Thursday’s tournament in Douglas County.

Newnan fell in the championship matches to Westlake 3-2. Westlake has won two straight region titles.

The Newnan girls beat rival East Coweta 4-1 and the boys prevailed 3-2 to set up the showdown with Westlake.

“It was a great day of tennis,” Newnan head coach Hap Hines said. “Both East Coweta and Newnan played hard and with a lot of integrity.

Newnan’s Lady Cougars picked up victories from sisters Carlie and Gray Griffies. Caroline Davis battled through a three-set tie breaker.

Lollie Davis and teammate Lindley Hudson won in doubles.

The boys earned wins from William Ballou, Landon Goolsby and Mikey Miller.

Against Westlake, Newnan’s girls team got a victory from Caroline Davis, and the doubles team of Emily Ferguson and Ansley Knight.

Newnan’s boys collected a doubles victories from Sam Thomas and Bennett Souter and Stewart Rand and Will Vineyard.
