Northgate to face Union Grove in region showdown

by Staff Reports

Suffice to say, Northgate’s baseball team has already moved on from its rough week prior to spring break.

The Vikings snapped a two-game slide in Region 4-AAAAA by taking batting practice against Forest Park in a 21-0 road victory in Clayton County that lasted four innings, highlighted by James Poropatic’s 3-for-3, 4-RBI effort that included a home run to leadoff the game.

He capped off the first inning with a two-run single before adding an RBI double in the third.

Pitchers Jonathan Fleckenstein and Chad Green each allowed just one hit and finished with three strikeouts apiece in the win, which improved Northgate’s record to 9-4 in 4-AAAAA and 12-6 overall.

Up next is a key matchup for playoff positioning against Union Grove (10-5) at home with seven region games remaining. The Vikings play at Ola on Saturday at 1 p.m., in a makeup from an earlier rainout.

Northgate returned from spring break tied for fourth place with Ola in a six-team race for four state playoff berths from 4-AAAAA. Streaking Whitewater (12-3) and McIntosh (11-3) were tied for first with three losses apiece heading into Tuesday. Starr’s Mill (9-3) also has three losses in the region.

Northgate entered spring break after back-to-back losses to Starr’s Mill and Whitewater to fall behind both teams in the standings.

The Vikings finished Tuesday’s win over Forest Park with 14 hits, five of which came in a three-run first. The team capped off the victory with a 13-run third inning that included eight hits and five walks while batting around the order twice.

Tyler Dahlberg belted a 2-run homer to highlight the inning while going 2-for-3 and scoring twice.

Robert Massenberg and Blake Helton also had two-run singles in the inning. Massenberg also went 2-for-3.
