Newnan continues busy week with victory

by Staff Reports

Two down, two to go.

Facing a week that includes playing four Region 3-AAAAAA baseball games over five days, Newnan continued to mow through opponents with a 5-2 road victory on Tuesday to begin a three-game series with Westlake.

The Lions struck for both of their runs in the bottom of the first off Cougar starting pitcher Thomas Sumner, who settled down from there. The senior finished with eight strikeouts and surrendered only one walk in the victory.

Newnan, which remained undefeated in 3-AAAAAA play at 7-0, took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fourth. Designated hitter Brandon Dawson went 2-for-2 with a double to help lead the Cougars’ offense.

Catcher Sam Buchanan also threw out a pair of baserunners in the victory, which also was Newnan’s 10th straight win.

The teams resume play today at Newnan in a game that was moved up from Thursday due to forecasts for rain. It will be part of the school’s Cougars For A Cure fundraiser efforts. The program will also be hosting young players from ages 5-14 who participated in its annual Spring Break mini-camp. Athletes wearing camp t-shirts will be admitted today for free.

Newnan opened this week by capping off a three-game region sweep of Tri-Cities during a convincing 13-1 victory in six innings on Monday in East Point.

Jake Kneidel, Grayson Stewart and Beau Shelnutt split time on the mound for the Cougars.

Connor Dunn and Buchanan both went 2-for-2 while Dunn, Drew Morris, Derrick Nelson and Charles Reeves all had doubles in a 10-hit performance for Newnan’s bats.
