Northgate, Newnan sweep opponents

The Northgate boys and girls tennis teams swept Mt. Zion-Jonesboro 5-0 in a pair of 8-game pro sets in Region 4-AAAAA play on Thursday at the Clayton County Tennis Center.

The Vikings moved their record to 7-1 while Northgate’s girls moved to 4-4. Both teams host Whitewater on Tuesday in a region match before traveling to Columbus on Wednesday in non-region play.

In boys action on Thursday against Mt. Zion, Hayden Victer (8-3), C.J. Evans (8-1) and Larry Sloan (8-0) took their singles matches.

Neither doubles teams lost a game as Cole Chenowith and Derek Kinsch won at the No. 1 position while Alex Armstrong and Andrew Kelley also rolled to a 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot.

Northgate’s girls rolled through all five of their matches with just one loss.

In singles, Danielle Rankin, Lauren Handley and Hayley Hasberger blanked opponents in respective matches.

In doubles, Laura Bowen and Mary Salyards also won 8-0 without dropping a game at the No. 2 position, while Amy Salyards and Avery Weatherford also dominated at the No. 1 spot, winning 8-1.

NEWNAN TEAMS DOMINATE IN SWEEP OF CHAPEL HILL: Coming off a weekend where respective teams faced tough opponents at the Marietta Invitational, Newnan tennis lineups were able to get a chance to thoroughly dominate Chapel Hill in a pair of 5-0 sweeps on Thursday at home in non-region action.

The Cougars dropped just one game while posting four shutout wins against the Panthers. William Ballou and Mikey Miller won 8-0 in singles at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Landon Goolsby also dominated his match, winning 8-1 at the No. 2 spot.

Doubles teams of Will Vineyard and Stewart Rand as well as Sam Thomas and Bennett Souter each posted 8-0 shutouts of their own for Newnan’s boys, who defeated North Cobb Christian in last weekend’s tournament.

The Lady Cougars, who finished third at the Marietta Invitational, had little trouble with the Lady Panthers while dropping just five games over five lines and three additional challenge matches. Newnan’s girls went 2-2 at Marietta, beating North Cobb Christian and Marietta to reach the finals against Allatoona.

The team dropped the second-place match against Westlake 3-2, though teams meet again on Tuesday in a match that will count in the Region 3-AAAAAA standings.

On Thursday against Chapel Hill, Gray Griffies and Caroline Davis each won 8-0 at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively while Carlie Griffies won 8-1.

Lollie Davis and Lindley Hudson held off their No. 1 doubles opponent 8-4 while Abbie Gordon and Emma Fuchs earned a shutout.

Newnan doubles teams of Emily Ferguson/Ansley Knight and Claire Hanna and Kaitlyn Hewett won challenge matches 8-0. Ellie Waters won 8-2 in singles.

East Coweta was schedued to play McIntosh at home on Thursday. The Lady Indians fell 4-1 to Union Grove on Wednesday with Priscilla Truong holding on for a 9-8 (7-3) victory in singles.
