Northgate defeats Mt. Zion; Newnan blanks Lovejoy

Newnan and Northgate baseball teams traveled Clayton County and came away with decisive wins.

Northgate knocked off Mt. Zion 12-3, while Newnan beat Lovejoy 11-0 in five innings.

NORTHGATE 12, MUNDY'S MILL 3: The Vikings have outscored their last two opponents 19-5 in a 24-hour period to collect two Region 4-AAAAA victories.

The Vikings improved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in Region 4-AAAAA action.

Northgate led from start to finish, moving two runs across the plate in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings continued to produce at the plate and scored three times in the fourth, once in the fifth, four in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Mt. Zion did its damage with one run in the third and two in the sixth. Only one of the Bulldogs’ runs, however, was earned off of starting pitcher Jonathan Fleckenstein.

Fleckenstein threw 5 1-3 innings, giving up three hits, striking out four and walking three. Zach Schmits pitched 1 2-3 innings of relief, striking out three.

Northgate outhit the Bulldogs 9-3. The Vikings won the 4-AAAAA contest despite committing five errors and leaving six base runners aboard.

The Vikings took the 2-0 lead after Tyler Dahlberg and Jeffrey Ginn each drove in RBIs in the first inning.

Mt. Zion cut the lead to 2-1 with its first run of the game in the bottom of the third.

Northgate, however put the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth inning. Andrew Burden had the big blow for the Vikings in the inning with two RBIs.

Spencer Perry’s double in the fifth knocked in Dahlberg to push the lead to 6-1.

The Vikings sent nine runners to the plate in the sixth with RBIs coming from Ginn and Jordan Schmits.

Northgate closed out the contest with two unearned runs in the seventh.

Perry, who sat out Wednesday’s 17-2 victory over Drew, returned for Thursday’s game and finished with a 3-for-3 performance to lead the Vikings’ nine-hit day. Perry also scored twice and added the RBI.

The Vikings travel to Mundy’s Mill today.

Ginn stayed on a recent tear at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. He now leads the Vikings with a .611 average over 18 at bats with six doubles

NEWNAN 11, LOVEJOY 0: The Newnan Cougars moved their record to 7-3 overall with an 11-0 victory on the road against Lovejoy in a game called after five innings.

Starting pitcher Thomas Sumner faced 13 batters and struck out eight.

Brandon Dawson pitched one inning of relief, setting down the three men he faced in order, including two by strikeout.

Will Dreggors had three hits and scored four times. Jake Kneidel and Justin Gruber also had hits. Sam Buchanan had two RBIs on a pair of deep sacrifice flies.

The Cougars start region play Tuesday at Douglas County.
