Prep Roundup: Newnan tennis sweeps Sandy CreekFrom Staff Reports
Newnan’s respective varsity tennis teams each posted its first victories of the season on Tuesday, with Bennett Sauter and Sam Thomas rallying back to help the Cougars roll past Sandy Creek 4-1 at home.
The Lady Cougars were even more dominating in a 5-0 shutout of the Lady Patriots as both Newnan lineups evened records at 1-1 following tough losses at LaGrange to open the season.
Newnan’s boys also received solid efforts at singles, getting wins from William Ballou (8-2) at No. 1 and Mikey Miller (8-3) at No. 3. Landon Goolsby battled at the No. 2 position before falling 8-6 for the Patriots’ lone win.
The Lady Cougars, meanwhile, cruised in a sweep of all five contested matches. Doubles teams of Lollie Davis and Lindley Hudson (8-1) along with Ansley Knight and Abbie Gordon (8-0) allowed just one game between respective No. 1 and No. 2 teams.
Sisters Gray and Carly Griffies earned respective singles wins of 8-4 and 8-3 at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Caroline Davis added an 8-1 victory at No. 3 singles.
Newnan added wins in three challenge matches. Among boys, Kenyan Woods and Jason Bervald won 8-3. Girls doubles teams of Emily Ferguson and Ellie Waters (8-0) as well as Claire Hanna and Kaitlyn Hewett (8-4) were also victorious while both teams now prepare for this weekend’s Peachtree City Tournament. The Cougars open against Rockdale and the girls against Brookstone.
East Coweta will also compete in the two-day event starting Friday.
LACROSSE TEAMS OPEN SEASON: The high school lacrosse season enters its second full week with Northgate’s boys opening its area schedule today at home against 1-AAAAA foe McIntosh (1-1).
Both East Coweta and Newnan’s boys have played at least a game heading into this week. The Indians are 2-1 following wins over Whitewater (12-7) and Northgate (17-2) and a loss to North Gwinnett (8-4).
A Cougars team looking to regroup following heavy losses from graduation dropped last Thursday’s opener at home to Archer 7-5 despite getting a pair of goals from sophomore Chris Maple and two points each from 10th graders Zach Keene and Austin Ohliger.
Sophomore J.T. Leake gave Newnan a 1-0 lead in the first quarter and junior Spencer Smith added a late tally on an assist from Keene.
Goalie Jordan Surrett, another sophomore taking over duties for former standout Adam Lanyi, had 11 saves in his first varsity start of the season.
An equally young Lady Cougars team dropped its first game of the 2013 season last Thursday to traditional power Columbus 13-6.
Senior Sydney Garmany and junior Sable Hawkins each scored twice in the second half while trying to help rally Newnan back from a 9-1 halftime deficit. The Lady Cougars lost The Newnan Times-Herald co-Players of the Year McKynsey Douglas and Maggie McDaniel to graduation in the offseason.
Juniors Anne Jarrett and Sydney Ohliger each had a goal and an assist in the loss. Junior goalies Lindsey Stewart and Morgan Garner combined for 10 saves while splitting duties in net.
