Both Northgate’s boys and The Heritage School girls basketball teams had their respective 2012-13 seasons come to a close in state tournament openers on Wednesday.
Faced with trying to upset Region 1-AAAAA champion Northside-Columbus in the first round, the Vikings were unable to create the same magic from its run in last week’s 3-AAAAA tournament while trying to extend the career of head coach Mack Cain, falling 64-47 to the Patriots.
Northgate (9-17) was making its first trip to the state basketball playoffs in the program’s 15-year history in what was also Cain’s final season prior to retirement.
Seniors Adrian Tolbert led the Vikings with 15 points and guard Luke Motzel added 10 in their final varsity games.
The Patriots stormed out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 34-16 at halftime and 47-28 after three quarters while controlling the tempo throughout the game.
The Heritage School Lady Hawks (15-11) also suffered an emotional exit in the first round of the GISA Class AAA tournament at Tattnall Square after entering the postseason against the Calvary Christian Lady Knights as the No. 2 seed out of Region 1-AAA following last week’s runner-up finish.

Rallying back from a six-point deficit after one quarter, Heritage School's girls responded in the second half in a 36-34 loss that came down to a buzzer-beating shot by the Lady Knights that eliminated the Lady Hawks.

Maggie Crosby led Heritage School with nine points and senior Chase Parker and Elizabeth Massenburg added eight and seven, respectively in the loss. Massenburg finished with a team-high six rebounds and Parker added five rebounds and five steals in the loss.
