Prep Swimming: Wheeler, Wallace, Delgado lead local effort in Athens meet

Both Northgate and East Coweta will head into Saturday’s regular season finale at the Summit YMCA after scoring over 100 points apiece at last weekend’s annual Clarke-Oconee Invitational in Athens.
They included a state-qualifying time for Vikings junior Andrew Wheeler in the 500-yard freestyle and a victory by Northgate sophomore Delaney Wallace in the girls 100 breaststroke during a 139-point effort to finish 16th among 30 schools in competition.
Athletics can swim in a maximum of two individual and two relay events at the GHSA Championships, set for Feb. 8-9 at Georgia Tech.
County lineups will have a final chance to add to state qualifiers at Saturday’s Tribal Challenge meet hosted by ECHS.
Wheeler will be one of at least three Northgate athletes to swim in individual events at the Class AAAAA state preliminaries on Feb. 8. Having already qualified in the 100 butterfly, Wheeler added a state time of 5:19.83 in the 500 freestyle on Saturday in Athens while placing seventh.
Wheeler added a fourth-place effort in the 100 butterfly in 57.55 at the Clarke-Oconee meet for another personal best.
Wallace’s mark of 1:11.39 to win the 100 breaststroke among girls events was also her top time of the 2012-13 season. She also finished third in the 50 freestyle in 26.00 with another personal best.
The Lady Viking sophomore has qualified in three individual events in addition to her participation on relays.
On Saturday, Wallace, junior Hayley Holmes and seniors Giulia Middei and Bria Malry posted a sixth-place effort for Northgate’s girls in the 200 medley relay in 2:05.60. The foursome also was 13th in the 200 freestyle.
Individually, Holmes placed 10th in the 100 backstroke and 13th in the 500 freestyle. Middei was 15th in the 100 butterfly and 19th in the 200 individual medley.
Malry placed 24th in the 100 breaststroke and 28th in the 50 freestyle.
Other solid efforts for the Lady Vikings included freshman Wendy Cervantes, who placed 18th in the 200 freestyle. Junior Sarah Ziegler was 26th in the 100 freestyle and junior Rachel Deloach 35th in the 100 breaststroke.
A 400 freestyle relay made up of Ziegler, Cervantes and sophomores Rachel Schick and Kelly Henderson finished 15th.
Viking relays included a 13th-place effort in the 200 medley from Wheeler, senior Alex Dahlquist, sophomore Harrison Griffiths and senior Russell Durrance.
Wheeler, Durrance, Dahlquist and freshman Spencer Ramthun were 15th in the 200 freestyle. Northgate’s ‘A’ relay of Griffiths, Ramthun, senior David Cooke and sophomore Zach Kula was 17th in the 400 freestyle.
Individually, Durrance had top-15 efforts in both the 500 freestyle (11th) and 200 freestyle (14th) and Ramthun was 14th in the 200 IM and 16th in the 100 butterfly.
Griffiths was 21st in the 100 breaststroke.East Coweta’s girls relay efforts included an 11th place finish in the 200 medley with a team of Delgado, seniors Kelsey Taliaferro and Kyra Odum and junior Katie Sears.
A Lady Indians 200 freestyle relay lineup of Delgado, Taliaferro, Odum and senior Lauren Hanus placed 12th.
In addition to her victory in the 200 freestyle, Delgado placed fourth in the 500 freestyle.
Taliaferro also scored in both of her individual events led by a third-place finish in the 200 IM. She also was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
Odum placed 21st in the 100 breaststroke and 29th in the 100 freestyle. Hanus was 33rd in the 100 backstroke and 36th in the 100 freestyle.
Sears added a 21st-place finish in the 200 freestyle.
The Indians’ top relay came in the 400 freestyle. A foursome of senior Luc Boulet and juniors Jesse Murr, Sam Siprelle and Hunter Kirbow placed 12th.
The four swimmers also placed 14th in the 200 medley relay.
Individually, Murr placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.55 and came within less than a second of a state qualifying time. He also finished 11th in the 200 IM.
Siprelle was 15th in the 200 freestyle and 18th in the 100 breaststroke. Boulet placed 26th in the 100 freestyle and Kirbow was 25th in the butterfly and 200 IM.
