Rally falls short for Lady Vikings in loss

The Northgate girls basketball team played with a split personality Friday against visiting Union Grove in a Region 4-AAAAA crossover game.

At times, Northgate battled the Lady Wolverines up and down the court, getting key rebounds and connecting on timely shots.

Other times, the Lady Vikings were their own worst enemy, hitting a shooting slump at the worst possible time. It translated into a 39-35 loss and dropped the Lady Vikings to 3-2 overall.

After building a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, Northgate hit its worst slump of the game in the second period, going without a field goal and getting outscored 12-1 as the Lady Wolverines led 18-11 at the end of the first half.

Lyric Underwood kept the Lady Vikings from getting shutout in the period hitting one of two free throws.

The Lady Wolverines hit a dry spell of their own and didn’t score over the final four minutes of the second quarter behind Deonna Williams, who connected on three quick baskets early to give the Lady Wolverines some cushion.

After falling behind by double midway through the third quarter, the Lady Vikings cut the lead to 30-24 heading into the final period on back-to-back baskets.

Amber Radda caught the ball inside the lane and put it off the glass to bring the lead back under 10 at 30-24.

Right before the end of the first half, Northgate ran the length of the floor and Underwood connected on a shot for the final basket of the third quarter.

Northgate was paced by Ebonee Echols’ 12 points. Underwood added 11. She also turned in a double double with 10 rebounds.

Treva Hickey led Union Grove with 13 points. Williams added 10.

Five players scored for each team. Although Rose Barrera only had six points for Northgate, she came up with a couple of rebounds and steals.

The Lady Vikings had a chance to cut into the score with second-half foul shots after going into the double bonus by the end of the third quarter.

Echols hit eight straight free throws sat one stretch.

The Lady Vikings’ junior guard helped pace a 9-1 run to open the fourth quarter.

After hitting four straight free throws in the period, Echols also converted a layup to tie the game a 31-31.

Rickese Brooks and Williams connected on back-to-back baskets and Union Grove never trailed again.

Northgate returns home Tuesday night for another Region 4-AAAAA crossover game against Drew.
