Northgate’s 3s not enough to top Union Grove

by Doug Gorman

DaQuan Ramey scored 12 points on four of Northgate’s 10 3-pointers against Union Grove on Friday, but the Vikings were unable to pull out a victory.

Teams that hit 10 3-point shots in a game typically are going to win.

However, the Northgate Vikings found out Friday that things don’t always follow as predicted.

Despite watching four players drain the long-range jumpers for Northgate, Union Grove rolled past the Vikings 77-61.

The two teams spent the first three quarters exchanging the lead , but after Alex Rutherford gave the Vikings a 35-33 margin late in the third quarter, Union Grove took over thanks to 19-5 run to extend the margin to 52-40 heading into the final period.

The loss spoiled a solid night of offense for the Vikings. Wendall Watson hit four 3-pointers early.

Aldrickus Evans also had the hot hand from 3-point territory finishing with four treys of his own.

Evans led the offensive attack with 19 points, while Rutherford chipped in 18.

DaQuan Ramey also connected on some timely 3-point shots for the Vikiings and finished with 12 points.

The victory kept Union Grove undefeated at 5-0, while Northgate dropped to 1-3.

Although Union Grove hit three 3-point shots, most of its damage came inside.

Jay Shorts, the 6-3 senior, hit several shots off the glass for the Wolverines and finished with 19 points.

Jordan Johnson got his offense on track for the Wolverines and finished with 18 points.

Northgate led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter on Watson’s 3-point shot at the end of the first quarter.

Shorts play in the second quarter pushed the Wolverines’ lead out to 22-16 at one stretch of the second quarter, but Northgate always seem to have an answer as Watson again came up with two big 3-point shots.

Evans also hit one of his treys right before the end of the first half to cut the the Wolverines lead to 28-27 right before he break.

Northgate took its final lead when Rutherford connected on a basket to go up 35-33 early in the third quarter.

Union Grove, however, put the game away from there with an 11-0 run.

Shorts’ basket gave the Wolverines 44-35 lead.

The Wolverines dominated from there and never let Northgate back in the game.

Caleb Ham added 20 and Luke Madden 18 for the Wolverines.
