Northgate wins twice to reach title game

The Northgate Lady Vikings took control of the Region 4-AAAAAA softball tournament Wednesday night at Mosley Park in Stockbridge with two big victories.

Northgate defeated both Union Grove 6-4 and Ola 3-2 just 24 hours after whipping Creekside 15-0 to open tournament play at home.

The Lady Vikings need just one more win to clinch a region title.

Northgate improved its record to 23-3-1 and awaits today’s opening game winner between Union Grove and Ola at 8 p.m.

The Lady Vikings defeated both Union Grove (2-0) and Ola (1-0) during the regular season.

Pitcher McKenzie Peace picked up both wins on Wednesday, striking out three against Union Grove while scattering 10 hits.

Trailing 2-1, Northgate scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to rally en route to its victory over Union Grove, last year’s Class AAAAA champions.

Jenna Pealor led the offensive attack for the Lady Vikings against the Lady Wolverines. Pealor finished with a single and double and also drove in two RBIs.

Brenna Skalski, Carly Alderman, Emily Heath and Jessica Hoak also had RBIs to send the Union Grove into the losers’ bracket.

The defending state champions pushed two runs across in the fifth before Peace held them scoreless in the final two innings.

Peace then dominated Ola, striking out 10 while allowing six hits. The Lady Vikings also took advantage of four Ola errors.

Northgate pounded out eight hits, but managed just two earn runs with Houk and McKenzie McCloud driving in runs.
