Prep Lacrosse: Cougars run out of steam vs. Peachtree Ridge
From Staff Reportssports@newnan.com
Scoring first and hanging tough through three quarters, Newnan’s boys lacrosse team put itself in position to advance in Tuesday’s first-round Class AAAAA playoff game.
Peachtree Ridge, however, wouldn’t let them.
Peachtree Ridge (12-8), this year’s Area 4-AAAAA champion, scored four unanswered goals after Newnan’s Bradley Roberts opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game.
But the Cougars fought back to close within a 5-4 deficit in the second quarter, getting a goal and an assist from Kyle Ward, who initially set up teammate Davis Ozier.
Despite going to halftime down 7-4, Newnan stayed within a three-goal deficit after three quarters with each team trading goals after halftime. Ward pulled the Cougars to within two with his second goal of the game, only to have Peachtree Ridge’s Jacob Lee answer just over a minute later.
Lion standout Michael Ruffcorn, however, polished off a four-goal effort by scoring twice during Peachtree Ridge’s five-goal outburst in the fourth quarter. Trevor Levor added three goals and Lee had two in the win.
Bradley Roberts and Bruce Powell added goals for Newnan in the loss.
