Friday's Prep Football Picks

From The Newnan Times-Herald Sports Staff

It's state playoff time in Coweta County and Georgia as our weekly prep football picks continue into the postseason.
Last week, our picks were a perfect 3-0 to improve our overall mark to 39-10 for the year, just under an 80 percent success rate.
Here we go for this week.
...........................
Alcovy (4-6) at Newnan (8-2): A year after being forced to travel to Valdosta following a loss to rival East Coweta, Newnan now is reaping the benefits of a win over the Indians. They include the Cougars’ home first-round playoff game since 2009 when they also played Valdosta. It’s also one of the more friendly matchups on the bracket. After last week, however, Newnan’s earned this one. ... COUGARS 35, Tigers 14
East Coweta (4-6) at Newton (5-5): The Indians were the own worst enemy at times last week with three interceptions and one lost fumble, but head coach Clint Wade team has a chance to right the ship this week. They only need to point to how Newnan handled its loss last year, where it took its frustrations out against its first-round playoff opponent. Get the hint, guys. ... INDIANS 24, RAMS 21
Northgate (5-5) at Harris County (6-4): The Vikings may have also caught a break considering they’re much more familiar with a Tigers team that they’ve played each of the last two years than state-ranked Thomas County Central. Despite the record, it won’t be easy, though. Harris has won six straight games and has plenty of incentive for payback following back-to-back losses to Northgate. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they’re facing a team that equally has found its stride. ... VIKINGS 28, TIGERS 17

Pinewood Christian (5-5) at Heritage School (9-1): It has definitely been a year of first for the Heritage School Hawks. With the best regular season in school history, including a region title and a 29-14 win over rival Trinity, head coach Kevin Prisant’s club can turn its attention to other matters like winning a playoff game en route to a first ever GISA title. It all starts tonight at home against Pinewood, who finished at .500 on the year but has suffered through a long playoff drought, getting back to the postseason for the first time since 2007. Don’t think Heritage is going to throw it all away now. ... HAWKS 48, PATRIOTS 21

Trinity Christian (6-4) and Westfield School (9-1): We have to say this is a winable game for the Lions, who have shown they can play in some tough surroundings this fall. On paper, the pair are mirror images both among numbers and style. The one thing Trinity might not have yet, however, is tradition. And Westfield has it in boat-loads. Unfortunately for Trinity, the Hornets has never lost a first-round playoff game under head coach Ronnie Jones in his 20 years at the school. Tonight it’s barely enough to hold off a spirited effort from a program on the rise in the GISA. ... HORNETS 24, LIONS 20
