The Northgate volleyball team jump started its 2012 season with victories over Cherokee (25-10, 25-14) and Rockdale (25-12, 25-16) in the opening night of the Sequoyah Invitational.
With the win over Rockdale, the Lady Vikings avenged last year’s loss to the Lady Bulldogs at the Class AAAA state tournament.
“It feel really good to get off to such a fast start,” head coach Matt Trucks said. “I thought we played really hard.”
The Lady Vikings enjoyed a solid night of serving, collecting several aces in both matches.
Randee Harvel helped pace the team with 10 kills, 6 digs and four aces. Taylor Kender, had three kills and 3 aces.
Michaella Crooks had four kills and two blocks, Brittany Scarbrough led the way with 23 assists. Freshman Savannah Moore got her high school career off to a fast start with three kills and two aces.

Northgate is set to play Johns Creek in the final game in pool play early Saturday morning before the tournament goes to the medal rounds. The Lady Vikings are at least guaranteed three games today.

East Coweta splits openers

The East Coweta Lady Indians won one and lost one in their first day of competition at the Sequoyah Invitational.

The Lady Indians knocked off Chamblee (25-14, 25-17) before falling to Lassiter (25-23, 25-19).

The Lady Indians will return to action today when they resume play in the event with three games.

Results of Newnan’s matches during the first day of the tournament were unavailable at deadline on Friday.
