The Georgia Department of Education approved Coweta's request to close its schools on Nov. 4 at its monthly meeting on Thursday. The local school administration requested the school closings because of the anticipated high voter turnout expected this presidential election year. Eight of Coweta's 28 precinct locations are at school facilities.

Mentors are needed for Coweta students http://www.times-herald.com/Education/Mentors-are-needed-for-Coweta-students-561077 Smokey Road Middle School needs about 30 men to step up and serve as mentors to some of their students, and Communities in Schools hopes they and others will show up at CIS' next mentor orientation session this month.

CIS is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with area schools to help youngsters succeed in school. It typically holds mentor orientation sessions twice a month at the Central Educational Center at 160 Martin Luther King Drive in Newnan. Its next hour-long session is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Oct. 22 in Room 102.

6 more Coweta schools make AYP http://www.times-herald.com/Education/6-more-Coweta-schools-make-AYP-558258 Six additional Coweta County schools made "adequate yearly progress" and another came off the state's "needs improvement" list following the release on Tuesday of the Georgia Department of Education's final AYP reports.

Evans Middle, Welch Elementary, Smokey Road Middle, Madras Middle, Lee Middle and White Oak Elementary made AYP after a large number of students attended summer school classes, retested and passed the math and reading Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) given in mid-June.

Last month the school in west Newnan adopted an Army platoon currently deployed in Afghanistan, and they are now part of the daily lives of 26 combat medics currently serving in a northeastern province of Afghanistan.

Born and raised in Atlanta, the University of West Georgia senior now lives in Newnan with her husband, her 15-year-old son and a 7-year-old niece.

The Coweta County school teacher stared at the clock and then walked over to a small group of 10- and 11-year-olds giggling in the corner. They had about five minutes to rehearse. She cued them to take positions.

Coweta schools still need residency affidavits http://www.times-herald.com/Education/Coweta-schools-still-need-residency-affidavits---551480 The Coweta County School System is requiring 2008-09 notarized affidavits of residence from the parents or guardians of all children enrolled in Coweta County Schools.

The affidavits must be completed and filed with schools by Dec. 18 in order for students to remain enrolled in their school. Letters informing parents and guardians of the requirement were sent to all student households on Sept. 11.

The Open House and Probe Fair are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Nora Ann Wood, CEC counselor, said "over 50 colleges and schools" will have representatives at the Probe Fair. "It is recommended that all juniors and seniors attend."

Glanton had been a teacher, coach and principal in Coweta for 35 years, mostly in Grantville, before he retired in 1972.

Coweta students scored an average of 1515 on the college entrance exam, which was higher than the national (1511) and state (1466) SAT averages. The average improved from 1504 last year.

"They're just cool," the fourth-grader at Glanton Elementary School in Grantville said of the popular children's novels by John Erickson. Buchanan and his fellow students at Glanton have gotten busy collecting empty aluminum soda cans and bringing them to school.

Sheldon Parham of Bremen won the white 2003 Nissan Sentra at the Sept. 5 afternoon drawing. His wife is a nursing student in the registered nurse program at West Central's Murphy campus in Waco. The car give-away and other events were all held in Carrollton, and winners had to be present to win.

Three of the 12 state awards went to people and organizations from Coweta County. The DSAs are the most prestigious awards given by Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA). Nominations are open to those who have made the most distinguished contributions to a county, area or state program. The CCSO board of directors nominated all three winners.
