Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Alvaton will be observing the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church this Sunday, Nov. 8.
A 10-minute film about the work of Open Doors to get Bibles to Christians in countries where they face persecution will be shown at the Brotherhood breakfast at 9 a.m. All men and boys are invited to the breakfast meeting.
During the 11 a.m. service, there will be a focus on the persecution of Christians around the world and the need for Christians in America to pray for their brothers and sisters in difficult situations. In many countries, Christians face death, imprisonment and discrimination for their faith.
On Nov. 15, the 11 a.m. service at Mt. Zion will include a tribute to Georgia songwriter Johnny Mercer. The Savannah native, known for many songs including "Moon River" and "Skylark," was born Nov. 18, 1909. He was distantly related to the Herndon family active in the Mt. Zion congregation for many years.
A special invitation is being issued to Herndon descendants.
Mercer's centennial is being celebrated across the nation and in several foreign countries this year. A statue of Mercer is being dedicated in Savannah, and Georgia State University has several events planned.
