Members of two local churches are working together to raise funds to help a local teen who has been struggling most of his life with sickle cell anemia.
Jamarie Styles Hunter, 14, has fought sickle cell since he was 8-months-old. He has been hospitalized more than 60 times -- with each stay lasting 5-7 days.
Hunter has undergone various medical procedures and experienced multiple bouts of excruciating pain throughout his young life.
Friends of Hunter from Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church and St. Smyrna Baptist Church are working together to raise funds to help with his medical expenses. A fellowship yard sale will be held Oct. 11 at St. Smyrna from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
The event is planned as a festive, family fun-filled day. Church groups, organizations, small businesses and the community will be participating. A wide range of items -- including baby clothes, toys and furniture -- will be for sale.
There will be face painting and free balloons. Baskets will be given away during the day.
There will be an ice cream truck at the yard sale. Hot dogs and drinks will be available, and there will be an inflated slide to entertain youngsters attending the event.
Following the yard sale -- from 6-9 p.m. -- there will be a Praise-A-Thon . Youth, sanctuary and mass choirs -- as well as male chorus groups -- will be singing. Members at Mt. Vernon are helping coordinate the days events.
