A Death Penalty Abolition Summit was held Jan. 28 at historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Among those speaking were Dr. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Everette Thompson of Amnesty International USA, Dr. Albert Brinson and Scott Bass.
Brinson was an organizer of the Atlanta Student Movement during the Civil Rights Movement. A member of Bass' family was murdered.
Kathryn Hamoudah, chair of Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, said the state's purchase of lethal injection drugs from a foreign supplier and the controversial execution of Troy Davis have both brought international criticism of Georgia's death penalty status.
"Troy Davis said repeatedly that his case was about so much more than himself. His case highlighted the many atrocities of Georgia's death penalty. Many people woke up because of his case, and we will gather at the summit to renew our commitment to stay engaged in this movement that will continue to challenge and end this irreversible and fallible system," Hamoudah said.
