Mt. Vernon focusing on youth this weekend

The focus is on youth this weekend at Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church.

A Youth Explosion is being held today at 5 p.m. Youth choirs, soloists and praise dancers have been invited to participate, and refreshments will be served.

Youth Day will be observed Sunday at 11 a.m. Tawana L. Johnson will be speaking.

A native of Dothan, Ala., Johns holds a bachelor of arts degree in theater from the University of Alabama -- Birmingham. Currently, she is working on her master of divinity degree at Beulah Heights University in Atlanta.

A member of Higher Living Christian Churchm, Johnson is active in ministry. She facilitates the new members orientation class and The Disciple’s Cross, a discipleship course that helps students develop a deeper, lifelong, obedient relationship with Christ.

Johnson also co-facilitates Roaring Lamb, a course designed to assist and encourage believers in using their gifts, talents and experiences to complete written works and publish them. She also teachers children’s church, Kids of the Kingdom.

In 2012 Johnson wrote, directed and produced Kids of the Kingdom’s resurrection and Christmas plays. Currently, she is at work on their summer production.

Johnson also serves as a member of her church’s praise team. She is an actress, writer, director and producer and enjoys using her creative abilities to spread the gospel.

Johnson has two daughters -- Karrie, 15, and IsaBelle, 12.
