Senoia UMC to hold concert in garden

Senoia United Methodist Church has a busy schedule right now. Volunteers are busy getting ready for a concert in the garden to be held July 27 at 5 p.m. Marnie Copeland said Abel, Rawls and Hayes will be playing. Members of the group are Ward Abel, Steve Rawls and Sloan Hayes. 'They play all kinds of music and have bass guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin and drums,' Copeland said. The concert will be held 'in the garden behind our meditation garden,' Copeland said. 'Everyone is invited to bring a blanket or chairs and come out to enjoy some great music and good times with us.'
Abel, who is a member at Senoia UMC, sings and plays guitars, tin whistle, mandolin, lapsteel and bass. He first began playing in the Atlanta band Jacob Rye. He had stints with Preface and Max Able. In the mid-'90s he and Rawls joined forces as Abel & Rawls. The duo released recordings in 1997 and 2001. Rawls sings and plays guitars, bass, mandolin and keyboard. He also began in Atlanta's Jacob Rye. He has produced numerous audio and live concert DVD productions. Hayes, who has played in numerous national and area touring acts, sings and plays keyboard, harmonica and flute. He was one of the keyboardists in Starbuck and was also in other popular bands such as Brother Bait and Reel People. Hayes has also worked as a composer and producer on many projects. Senoia UMC will welcome their new pastor, Erik A. Mays, and his family at an ice cream social this Sunday at 6 p.m. The gathering will be held in the side yard and Meditation Garden area. Church members will bring churns of ice cream, storebought ice cream, toppings, desserts and beverages. Mays was appointed to Senoia UMC in June 2013. He came to Senoia from First United Methodist Church in Marietta, where he served as associate minister from 2011-2013. Earlier, he served Belin Memorial United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet, S.C., from 2009-2011 and First United Methodist in Covington from 2006-2009. Mays, who was ordained an elder in June, is a lifelong United Methodist who grew up attending Due West United Methodist in Marietta. He holds two undergraduate degrees - one from Reinhardt College in liberal arts and one from LaGrange College in religion and philosophy. In 2009, Mays earned his master of divinity degree from Emory University's Candler School of Theology. He has a decade of experience in youth ministry and has been on more than 20 mission trips in the United States and in Mexico, Poland, Venezuela, Peru and Guatemala. Mays met Lindsey Kehoe on his trip to Mexico, and they married in 2007. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia and holds a master of science degree in occupational therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina. The Mays have a daughter, Addie Grace.
