Churches preparing for Easter tomorrow

At churches across Coweta County, pastors and members are busy today preparing for the holiest day of the year.

Tomorrow will be Easter when Christians from western churches celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Eastern Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter on May 5 this year.

Holy Week services were held in many area churches during the past week — with particular emphasis on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Services and programs continue today and Sunday. They include:

TODAY, MARCH 30

• Blessing of Food for Family Meals, St. George Catholic Church, 11 a.m.

• Easter Vigil, St. George Catholic Church, 8 p.m. Father Henry Atem with light a new fire from which the solitary, large, blessed Easter candle will be lit.

• Great Vigil of Easter with incense, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 10:30 p.m.

• Spanish Easter Vigil, St. George Catholic Church, 11 p.m. Bishop Luis Zarama, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta will lead the service. New members will be received at both Easter Vigil services.

EASTER SUNDAY, MARCH 31

• Outdoor Sunrise Service, Resurrection Lutheran Church, 7 a.m.

• Sunrise Service, Greenville Street Park, 7 a.m. Light breakfast to follow in parish hall, First United Methodist Church.

• Sunrise Service, Sunnyside Baptist Church, 7 a.m. Light breakfast to follow.

• Sunrise Service, Northside Baptist Church, 7 a.m.

• Outdoor Sunrise Service, Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church, Roscoe, 7 a.m. Breakfast to follow.

• Sunrise Service, Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church, Sharpsburg, 7 a.m.

• Sunrise Service, Crest Lawn Memorial Park, Atlanta, 7 a.m. Refreshments.

• Sunrise Service, New Hope Church, Wooster/Greenville, 7 a.m. Breakfast to follow.

• Sunrise Service, Providence Baptist Church, Providence Church Road, 7:30 a.m. Breakfast to follow at 8:15.

EASTER MONDAY, APRIL 1

• Mass, St. George Catholic Church, 8:30 a.m. followed by Eucharistic Adoration until noon, and also from 6-9 p.m. Catholics will begin the liturgical season of Easter which lasts for 50 days until it Pentecost, which is May 19 this year.
