Frankie Lyle UDC presents service awards to veterans

Frankie Lyle Chapter 2074 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy observed Veteran’s Day with a Ceremony of Bestowal of Military Service Awards.
Among those recognized at the Nov. 11 ceremonies was Frank Powers, longtime pastor of East Newnan Baptist Church. The UDC presented awards to veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and the Global War on Terror.
Ruth Smith, chapter president and Linda Ramey, recorder of military service awards, assisted by Susan Sloan, past recorder of military service awards, presented the medals to the recipients. Linda Patterson and Dianne Webb served as pages for the veterans.
Nancy Watkins, vice president, led pledges to the U.S. flag and Georgia flag and in the salute to the Confederate flag. Patriotic chairperson Becky West accompanied by pianist Hugh Waddy led everyone in “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Georgia On My Mind” and “Dixie Land.”
Shirley Thrailkill, the chapter’s chaplain, gave the invocation and benediction. Musical interludes were provided by Waddy, and Webb read a poem “My Name Is Old Glory” by William Schnauber.
Sparks Ramey, Sons of Confederate Veterans member, presented a slide presentation, “Here’s to the Heroes”, honoring the veterans.
Receiving Crosses of Military Service were: U.S. Army, Jack Gibby – Vietnam; U.S. Army, Robert Torbush and Blake Pittman – Global War on Terror. Crosses of Military Service was given posthumously for the World War II service of Bert McDade Sr., who served the U.S.Navy, and Harold Boyd, who served in the U.S. Army.
Lt. Col. Lewis Harper, McDade’s grandson, received that award. Boyd’s cross was received by his daughter, Mrs. Brenda Torbush.
The Vietnam Cross was presented posthumously to Eugene Conrad Jr., who served in the U.S. Army. His sister, Mrs. Robin Lane, was presented with the honor.
National Defense Medal recipients were: Woodie Harper, U.S. Army – Korean War; Ed Harper, U.S. Army – Vietnam; Charles Garvin, U.S. Army – Vietnam; Frank Powers, U.S. Army – Persian Gulf. The Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal recipient was Alicia Torbush Clark, U.S. Army – Global War on Terror.
