On May 6, the 2012 class of First Communicants, mostly second graders, received the sacrament of first communion at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.
The class has been in formation for two years. The year of formation develops the understanding that the Eucharist is a living memorial of Christ’s sacrifice for the salvation of all and also teaches that the Eucharist is a sacred banquet, a commemoration of Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and emphasizes that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ, his Real Presence.
During the two years of formation, the children also explore the meaning of the ritual, symbols, prayers and gestures of the Mass, promoting active and conscious participation in the weekly service. Through frequent reception of the Eucharist, believers are strengthened by Christ to serve the world.
First Communion Masses were held at 9 a.m. and at noon.
