Fragrant smoke rose from the cooker at East Body Shop Sales.
Local residents – and travelers getting off nearby Interstate 85 for a break – were drawn by the scent of slowly cooking meat. Sylvia Boston expertly turned and poked ribs and chicken on the morning of the June 9 fundraiser for New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
Other church members monitored a yard sale. Clifford Davis, pastor of the Corinth Road church, said funds were being raised to remodel the church building.
New Hope will be holding Deacon’s Day on Sunday. The service will start at 2:30 p.m.
The congregation also will honor Davis at a Pastor Anniversary service on July 15. “We will be celebrating 17 years of service,” Boston said.
“We will have regular services at 11a.m. followed by an evening program,” she said. The 2:30 p.m. service will include a message by Melvin Brittian, pastor of Providence Baptist Church on Summers-McKoy Road.
Boston said she hoped many would attend “and share with us in this blessed occasion.”
