The 2009 high school soccer season ended with the East Coweta Indians one game short of a AAAAA boys title, and with The Heritage School Lady Hawks one game short of a GISA AA title.
The Indians finished their season 15-5.
East Coweta Head Coach Todd Beldon is the coach of the year for the All-Coweta boys soccer team, selected by The Times-Herald sports department.
East Coweta's Alex Sandland is the 2009 player of the year.
Sandland led the Indians in scoring with 24 goals and six assists.
Beldon and Sandland are joined on the squad by six other members of the Indians. To make a return to the state playoffs this year, the Newnan Cougars relied on the scoring of Sam Taylor and on the emergence of young goalie Patrick McAlpin. Both Newnan players made this year's all-county team along with Northgate's T.J. Healy, Casey Vaughn and Wesley Lutz.
Other East Coweta players named are Trevor Byrum, Ryan Danford, Corey Geary, Kevin Goerner and Michael Rabun.
For the girls, the 2009 season was very good to The Heritage School Lady Hawks and Emily Gray Powell.
Powell led the region in goals, scoring 41 in the regular season and adding seven more in the playoffs. Her Lady Hawks ended the season 18-1, falling for the first time this season in the state championship.
Powell is the 2009 Coweta County player of the year.
Because Northgate's Lady Vikings made the state playoffs for the first time in five years and ended the season with a 17-3 record, head coach Mike Berry has been selected as the coach of the year for girls soccer.
Berry leads a contingent of five other Northgate representatives, as defenders Devin Frye, Becky Clay, Lindsay Caldwell along with midfielder Sarah Daane and forward Katie Taylor join the team this year.
Powell is not alone in representing Heritage School. Midfielders Layna Carnicom, Katie Kaufmann and Allie Gruber, as well as forward Kathryn Martin and defender Claudia Bost, were named to the team.
The Lady Indians, who will be coached by boys assistant Chris Luppens in 2010, had four representatives to make the team -- Andye Dawson, Chelsa Hise, Heather Pierce and Amber Wright.
