There have already been lots of eggs hidden and hunted in Coweta County this year, but the big day for Easter egg hunts in the area will be Saturday.
More than a dozen egg hunts are being held -- with area children invited to bring their baskets and enjoy the fun -- in the local area. Eggs -- boiled, plastic and candy -- will be hidden at Coweta homes throughout the weekend to the delight of the young hunters.
American Legion Post 57 -- along with American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 57 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 57 -- will hold the annual egg hunt for children 12 and younger Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Coweta Veterans Club on U.S. Highway 29 north. There will be more than 2,000 eggs and candy. Prizes will be awarded.
There will be more than 4,000 eggs at the hunt at First Baptist Church of Moreland at 11 a.m. Saturday. Free pizza and cola will also be available.
Several churches are combining egg hunts with other activities. St. Smyrna Baptist Church will hold an egg-stravaganza at noon. A time of praise and worship will be held with lunch, and an egg hunt for ages 2-12 to follow.
First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City will have an egg hunt -- and the bestowing of the Golden Egg Awards at 11:30 a.m. That hunt will follow a morning of activities, starting with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the First Presbyterian men at 9 a.m. Between pancake and Easter egg time, the Peachtree City church will offer crafts, face painting, a petting zoo, spring family photos and Easter basket give-aways.
Community egg hunt events are scheduled in Palmetto at 10 a.m. and in Luthersville at 2 p.m. Palmetto's hunt will take place at Veterans Park and will be held regardless of the weather.
The newly beautified city park will be the site for Luthersville's hunt. The Lutherville Social Club will be providing refreshments, and photographs with the Easter Bunny will be available.
Coweta's biggest egg hunt event of 2009 has already been held. WellSpring Church, a new church in Senoia, originally planned its egg drop for March 28 but delayed it until the following afternoon due to wet weather.
The church, which meets at Eastside Elementary School, arranged for 20,000 eggs to be dropped from a helicopter. Church officials estimated more than 2,000 in attended the event at Senoia Raceway.
"This was a great event for families. At a time like this, it's nice for a church to provide a free family outing," said Bill Harris of Senoia, who attended the Egg Drop. "That's exciting."
The WellSpring band played original and cover tunes for more than an hour. The lines at the inflatable games moved along quickly and, after the egg drop, prizes were given out. Prizes included bicycles, iPods, Nintendo DS's, and gift cards to many local businesses.
