Pastor says church can meet building code within 6 months

Holy Zion Center of Deliverance is moving forward with plans to renovate its building to meet the city's building code.

Bishop Cecil Newton, pastor of the Temple Avenue church, and Melvin Cooper, the general contractor for the project, attended the Newnan City Council meeting on Monday evening. Holy Zion is located at 115 Temple Ave. in an industrial building that formerly housed a building supply business.

"As of this afternoon, we received the revised plans," said Matt Camp, the city's code enforcement officer.

Newton told the council the building can be brought to code "inside of six months." He also said the church has the money in hand to proceed with the work.

The council approved an extension for Holy Zion. Representatives of the church and the city are to work out a schedule with regular reporting on progress as the work is done.

Camp presented information about Holy Zion's situation to the council. He also outlined several other issues related to building standards in the city, including:

* 8 Thompson St. Owner Mattline Render attended the meeting. Camp recommended a 180-day extension.

"This will probably be completed in 90-120 days," Camp said. He said he was asked for a bit longer to avoid the problem of having to seek another extension.

Three rooms are "walled in," Camp said, and work is progressing. Councilman George Alexander said he had been by Render's home. "There is true progress being made," he said.

* 11 Tuxedo Ave. and 21 Tuxedo Ave. The council set public hearings concerning the two structures for Oct. 27.

* 21 Fourth St. A lender is in the process of foreclosing on the property. City Attorney Brad Sears said the lender has asked for a 60-day extension "to be able to take control of the property."

Sears said Linda Mitchell, a local real estate agent, has been showing the property "to some prospective purchasers." Abigail Greenhaw represented the lender at Monday's meeting. Discussion of the property was delayed until the council's second meeting in October.

* 68 Savannah St. The council passed a resolution to demolish the home after being told the owner plans to demolish it.

* 112 Greenville St. Camp has had contact with the owner, and council members asked him to make sure the owner understands what is expected in terms of progress.

* 8 Thompson St., 23 Dewey St. Camp had no specific progress to report.
