(Editor’s note: Rebecca Leftwich, a staff writer with The Newnan Times-Herald, shares the story of her young Carroll County neighbor and family friend, Blake McConahy, who received a heart transplant during Christmas.)
On one sunny day back in November, I sent my kids out to play while I thudded around the kitchen, a past-the-elbow cast over my newly fractured right wrist making it difficult even to get dinner started.
I heard someone call to me through the open window. I looked out and saw Blake – equipped with an IV pump – sitting in the middle of our trampoline.
“I heard you broke your arm,” he said. “I hope it gets better soon.”
“Thanks,” I said. “But I hope you get your heart first.”
A follow-up exam for tendon problems that have plagued me since my initial injury is scheduled for mid-January.
Blake got his new heart on Christmas Day.
