The Candler Singers will perform at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on April 5.
The concert will start at 7 p.m. The Candler Singers are a select group of skilled musicians from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.
The Candler Singers are presenting free concerts in middle and south Georgia from April 5-7. The performances will feature church music from around the globe, including classical, contemporary, folk and spiritual genres.
The singers and instrumentalists who make up The Candler Singers are all seminary students at Candler School of Theology and are preparing for ministry in the church, the academy and the world. They come from a variety of Christian denominations and from several nations, including South Korea, Canada and the United States.
The group leads worship weekly at Candler. They also represent the seminary at public events and go on concert tours across the Southeast.
Allan Sandlin, rector of St. Paul's, holds a master of divinity degree from Candler, where he was a Woodruff Scholar and member of the Candler Singers from 1985-89.
The Candler Singers have performed at a wide range of churches, regional events and denominational gatherings. They have been a featured choir in worship and in concerts during the quadrennial General Conferences of The United Methodist Church in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
Barbara Day Miller, associate dean of worship and music at Candler School of Theology, directs the ensemble. A careful worship planner and ordained minister, Day Miller says that she is always encouraged when she hears comments from audience members that the Singers’ performance was more than a concert, but a spiritual experience.
“I think one of the reasons the choir is so compelling is because it’s obvious they believe what they’re singing — and that comes across to the audience,” she noted. “It’s a time of deep and meaningful worship.”
Almost 30 youth and adults from St. Paul's joined Robert Wright, Episcopal bishop of Atlanta, and more than 15,000 other people at Turner Field on March 10 for the 2013 Hunger Walk/Run. The event is co-sponsored by the Episcopal Charities Foundation.
Donations from St. Paul's members were collected. Proceeds from the event will be used for food needs in the Atlanta area.
