East Coweta High’s air rifle team qualified for next month’s national service championships after finishing third at last weekend’s Marine and Navy JROTC Championships in Anniston, Ala.
A lineup including Destiny Collier, Ashton Collier, Charles Matthews, Glen Lauzon and Jacob Kelley fired a score of 4,553 in the two-day event. Qualifying was held simultaneously in Alabama and Utah, with East Coweta’s effort finishing fourth nationally among Marine JROTC teams.
In Anniston, ECHS’s shooters came in behind only traditional power Shelby County, Ky., which fired a 4,663 and North Forsyth’s two-day total of 4,574.
East Coweta, coached by Major Peter Merrell, was strong in prone positions on both days with scores of 786 (out of 800) and 788. The team improved its kneeling score from 761 to 771 on the final set of relays. The team finished ahead of Fern Creek, Ky. (4,528), Colquitt County (4,499) and Lithia Springs (4,496).
Lauzon led ECHS individually while placing 11th overall while just missing out on reaching the finals. Led by scores above 190 in both his prone and kneeling positions, the East Coweta sophomore finished with a 1,144, one point out of 10th and two from reaching the finals. He was near perfect in prone with efforts of 197 (out of 200) and 198.
Ashton Collier was 13th with a score of 1,143 while Destiny Collier and Charles Matthews each posted identical efforts of 1,133 to place 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
The JROTC National Championships will also be held in Anniston, Ala., from March 21-23.
Both Lauzon and Destiny Collier, a freshman, have qualified individually for the Georgia High School Association Championships in April while helping East Coweta jump out to a 5-1 record atop the Area 5 West Standings.
Both have posted scores of 290 (out of 300) during the regular season. Lauzon ranks third in Area 5 with a 286.5 scoring average while Collier is fifth at 285.83.
Lauzon is the area’s top shooter in prone with a 99.17 average while also second in kneeling (96.5). Collier is third in standing (92.83) and fourth in kneeling (95.83).
East Coweta has a top score of 1,132 during the GHSA season so far. The Area 5 Championship is scheduled for March 14.
